INGROWN TOENAIL TREATMENT
IN NORTH LONDON

An ingrown toenail occurs when a curved toenail grows and digs into the skin, rather than straight up. Treatment ensures it is removed and does not grow back in this way.

What is an Ingrown Toenail?

Ingrown toenails are a common issue, where the nail grows into the side of the skin. It can be very painful, causing the toe to become swollen and sore.

What are the causes?

Ingrown toenails can be caused by a number of different issues, including:

  • Badly cut toenails – such as if you cut your toenails too short, unevenly, or around the edges. Or the nail has been torn off. This can cause sharper edges, encouraging the surrounding skin to grow over the toenail.
  • Tight shoes or socks – wearing shoes or socks that are too tight can put pressure on the skin around your toenails, and the nail may pierce the skin.
  • Sweaty feet – sweat can cause the skin around the toenails to become softer, making it easier for the nail to pierce the skin.
  • Natural toenail shape – some people have naturally rounder toenails. Unfortunately, these shapes are more likely to press into the sides of the skin.
  • Abnormal foot function or foot structure can contribute towards ingrown toenails.
Ingrown Toenail Treatment and Surgery

As a well-established Chiropodist/Podiatrist, I understand that ingrown toenails can cause pain in both adults and children. If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can cause discomfort and infection. Commonly, people say even bed sheets on the toes can cause pain at night.

To treat an ingrown toenail, surgery will include removing part of the toenail, or the entire nail. Gentle care and attention will always be given, and if required, the use of local anaesthetics can resolve the pain immediately during the surgery procedure.
